The modern architecture in Katowice

In recent years, one of the most underrated places in downtown Katowice, the so-called moden district (Dzielnica Moderny), has been discovered. The southern part of city centre hides real pearls of modernist architecture with tenement houses, villas and churches of characteristic geometric shapes.

Recently, has been created a special Modern Trail (Szlak Moderny) and one of the most interesting points of the trail is the Drapacz Chmur. The skyscraper built in the 1930s was then one of the tallest buildings in Europe. It is 60 meters high and has 14 floors. Nowadays, it’s an ideal example of functional architecture in Poland - from the beginning of its existence, it has housed tax institutions. You will find it at Żwirki i Wigury 15−17 Street.

Another noteworthy object is the Garrison Church of St. Kazimierz the Prince. It was the first church in Poland built in this style. What’s more, the entire interior is furnished in an art-deco style. That pink building is on Kopernik Street.

While walking through the modern district, look for information boards marked with a QR code, which will allow you to delve into the details and the history of each monument.
